SKI SALT LAKE CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Cosmopolitan city or an outdoor recreation destination? Salt Lake City is both in one. Recently named as one of Outside magazine’s “18 perfect towns that have it all,” Salt Lake, with all its snowsports options, also has pro basketball plus a symphony, opera, dance companies and live theater, not to mention the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The choices of what to do when not on the slopes or trails are almost endless and include gourmet dining, rollicking brew pubs, comedy clubs, shopping, art galleries, and did we mention stuff like bobsledding, Nordic jumping and speed skating? You'd better stay an extra week.

Hosting the 2002 Olympics helped to enhance and show off the city and the nearby canyons. The quantity and quality of the snow has to be experienced in person to be truly appreciated. Yes, they must have inclement days, but it certainly seems that the snow comes mostly at night, leaving skiers and riders with feathery powder on beautiful bluebird days. In fact, rumour has it that it snows at Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon resorts on average every third day.

SKI SALT LAKE SUPER PASS
With the Ski Salt Lake Super Pass, you can ski at a different resort every day for the best possible price. It provides access to 7,500 acres of skiable terrain and makes Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude more affordable and accessible. You must be staying at a participating hotel in Salt Lake City. The Pass also includes round-trip transportation from downtown and suburban Salt Lake City to the resorts. Find it at (877) 752-4386 or www.ski-saltlake.com.

Salt Lake shouts wide open spaces and Western scope with its distinctive streets built wide enough for a wagon with a team of oxen to make a U-turn, yet it is connected by non-stop flights to more than 90 destinations. This means skiers and boarders can have breakfast at home and take advantage of free skiing at Alta from 3 to 4 p.m. that afternoon. The towering Rockies and fantastic skiing and boarding are a mere 35 minutes from downtown. (For in-depth information on getting around the region, see Getting there.)

While the altitude – as high as 11,000 feet at some of the resorts – means drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep, there are those who have enough energy to go out on the town after attacking the slopes all day. Hooray, drinking is allowed in Utah. Microbreweries are everywhere. and martini bars are springing up for those who want their alcohol high-test. Add in jazz clubs, country western hangouts, piano bars and live music and staying in Salt Lake means skiers and riders will have a well-rounded winter resort experience in the middle of a happening city.
