Park City Mountain Resort, Utah

Lodging (Area Code 435)

In and around Park City are bed-and-breakfasts, country inns, chain hotels and condominiums. Park City's lodging is roughly grouped either in the old town surrounding the Resort Center Complex or in the Prospector Square area. A wonderful newer part of town is Lower Main (also called South Main), which surrounds the base of the Town Lift. All areas are served by the free shuttlebus system.

In old Park City the best is the Washington School Inn (800-824-1672; 649-3800; $$–$$$$; above). This is a very elegant 15-room (including three suites) country inn built in a former schoolhouse. Each room has a private bath and is named to honor a former Park City teacher. Everything is definitely first-class. It has a hot tub and steam bath, steps away from the center of the old town. If you are on your honeymoon, ask for the Miss Urie Room. Room rates include breakfast and afternoon tea. No children under age 12.

Brand new in the historic Old Town, The Sky Lodge (435-658-3336; $$$$) has 22 "residences" and an opulent spa. It aims to be considered one of the finest boutique resort hotels in the world and we think they've made it. The concept is opulent New York City loft — the smallest room is 1,260 square feet. Rooms are equipped with multiple flat panel HDTVs and Bose surround-sound systems with iPod cradles. Selected three-bedroom units feature theater dens—reflecting Park City’s contribution to the world of cinema—that include wet bars and 40-inch flat-panel screens.

The Blue Church Lodge & Townhouses (800-626-5467; 649-8009; $$–$$$$) are constructed around an old church a block from Main Street. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is a grouping of seven condominiums ranging from one to four bedrooms in the church, with four additional townhouses across the street. A continental breakfast is included, but doesn't fit the category of B&B in the classic sense. It has indoor and outdoor spas and laundry facilities.

If the key to lodging, as in real estate, is location, location, location, then Treasure Mountain Inn (800-344-2460; $$–$$$$) at the top of Main Street is a winner. These are studio and one- and two-bedroom condos with kitchens. Each of the three buildings has a coin-operated laundry and there is a hot tub in the courtyard. Rooms are quiet, but step outside and you are in the middle of the nighttime action.

Another spot on Main Street is the 1904 Imperial Hotel (800-669-8824; 649-1904; $$$), a B&B in a historic old house. All rooms have their own bath, telephone and TV. There's a big hot tub for everyone to use (guests also can reserve private hot-tub time). Lizzie, the hotel's ghost, turns lights on and off and rings bells to get attention (she never appears in person). Legend is that Lizzie was killed in the Mayflower Room by a jealous lover. The hotel's sister property, The Old Miners' Lodge (900-289-4000; 645-8068; $$–$$$) is two blocks from Main Street on Woodside Avenue. Intermediate skiers can ski to the back door, but it's a long walk down a hefty flight of stairs to get to the Town Lift. The lodge is historic and quiet (it's a member of Select Registry) with rooms that have private baths but no TV or in-room phones.

The bargain spots are dormitory digs and rooms in the Chateau Apres Lodge, "A Skier's Ski Lodge" (800-357-3556; 649-9372; $–$$). The lodge has a retro circular fireplace in the center of its common lounge. Complimentary continental breakfast and hot cider for apres-ski are included.

The South Main area is a hot spot in town. The Marriott Summit Watch (800-845-5279; 647-4100; $$$–$$$$) is in the middle of this pedestrian complex with restaurants, shops and the Town Lift right outside the door. A draw is the Marriott's Aquacade, a pool and activities center built under old trestles. Every evening there's something scheduled for kids, such as crafts, movies or ice skating , ranging in cost from $15 to $30.

Near the Resort Center you'll find another cluster of hotels and condos. The best is the Silver King Hotel (800-331-8652; 649-5500; $$$–$$$$; above left). This condo hotel is about 100 yards from the lifts and at the hub of the transportation system. Some units have private hot tubs. The Lodge at the Mountain Village (888-727-5248; 649-0800; $$$–$$$$) is the second choice for luxury. It literally surrounds the base area lifts for true ski-in/ski-out. It has lots of amenities—spas, health club, pool, steamroom and concierge. Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel & Conference Center (800-451-3031; 649-4300; $$–$$$$) is the other top property near the lifts. It has a sauna, hot tub and laundry, plus underground parking. Choose from hotel rooms to three-bedroom condos.

Snow Flower Condominiums (800-852-3101; 649-6400; $$–$$$$) is 100 feet from the beginner area and offers studios to five-bedroom units. Each unit has single-person jetted tubs and underground parking.

For more economical condos, try Edelweiss Haus (800-245-6417; 649-9342; $$–$$$$) across the street from the lifts and the Silver King Hotel. Extras include a heated outdoor pool and hot tub. Hotel rooms to two-bedroom condos are available.

Other locations in town:
The Inn at Prospector Square (888-870-4386; 649-7100; $$–$$$$) is a group of condos that includes use of its athletic club in the rates. The Yarrow Resort Hotel (800-927-7694; 649-7000; $$–$$$$; right) is considered good family lodging. Children under 12 stay free and the hotel, with a year-round heated outdoor pool, sits amid shopping, movies and restaurants. It is on the shuttlebus route, about a five-minute ride from Park City's Main Street.

The 199-room Park City Marriott (800-754-3279; 649-2900; $$–$$$$) features a wide range of amenities including refrigerators and coffee makers in every room, plus double phone lines and desks with built-in outlets for those who must combine work with pleasure. It also has an atrium pool, sauna, hot tub and restaurant. The bus stop is right outside the door.

The Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau ( 800-847-5810) makes reservations for some of the best rates.

Accommodations Legend: (double room) $$$$–$200+; $$$–$141–$200; $$–$81–$140; $–$80 and less
