Other activities
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise offers guests a full menu of winter activities: ice skating on the lake (and around a magnificent ice sculpture), snowshoeing, cross-country skiing on the lake, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowmobiling (outside the park), and shopping. The hotel's bottom floor features an Aveda spa with all treatments available, as well as chocolate, clothing, sports and jewelry shops, all with outstanding goodies and merchandise. The small Village of Lake Louise, down the hill from the Chateau, has a tiny outdoor mall. Stop in at Langdon's, one of the most talked-about coffee shop/delis in Lake Louise. The mall also has a grocery, sports, gift, and liquor store.
If you're not staying at the Chateau Lake Louise, non-skiing activities are limited. Kingmik Sled Dog Tours (877-919-7779; 403-763-8887), operating since 1982, offers trips ranging from a 30-minute introduction to the two-hour Great Divide Experience to the Aberta/British Columbia Great Divide, during which participants get a chance to drive the team. Each sled holds up to two adults and one child and costs C$275.
The Banff/Lake Louise area offers many more opportunities for other winter sports such as skating, dogsledding, ice fishing, ice canyon crawls (the famous Johnston Canyon Icewalk) and ice climbing, as well as sightseeing, hot springs and museums; see Banff for details.
